South Park Lets Go Tower Defence brings the obscene characters from the TV show along with other ridiculous enemies in tower defence game, surprisingly. For those unfamiliar with the concept, gamers are presented with a map in which enemies cross from one side to another and the objective is to stop them, which in this case is with turrets and well placed obstacles. It doesn't strictly follow the management formula, as it's possible to control characters instead of leaving all the killing to the computer. It's up to the kids to defend the town against some evil force which is destroying the town with ginger kids, hippies and cows.
Gameplay:
From the start the game follows the crude humour of the cartoon and the whole game is presented in an over-the-top action anime style, much like a parody of Dragonball Z. When the round starts time is given to built fortifications, like snowball throwing machines or lasers, each has its advantages on certain types of enemies. The first stages are pretty basic(too basic on the easy difficulty) but as the game progresses, some good tactical judgement will be required to create bottlenecks of destruction, forcing enemies into them. The attackers will come in waves at set time intervals, so taking too long will result in being overwhelmed in an onslaught of gnomes and hippies. After certain types of enemies are defeated, gamers are treated to some clips from the show, though they only last a few seconds.
Also included is challenges, here there is a set level and there's more options available but these are only unlocked after completing the storyline chapters. It doesn't take long before the four main characters are unlocked, but playing by yourself means you can only control one at a time. Thankfully the game does have a multiplayer mode so you wont be left switching and moving characters individually, playing with friends is definitely more fun and more efficient. Coins can be collected from fallen enemies and more defences can be built or upgraded during the level. Even on normal difficulty it can get hectic, but there are special abilities available, for example Cartman can call in a carpet bomb killing all on-screen enemies or Stan has the ability to restore the towns health should it get depleted by the weird attackers that make it through. Controlling the characters is awkward at times as it is auto-aim so its impossible to choose targets even though sometimes its obvious which one is the best to hit.
Graphics:
The game does a good job of staying faithful to the shows style. Although the storyboards are comical, the only animation is during gameplay, apart from this however, South Park fans wont be disappointed in the way the game is presented.
Sound:
There is a silly voice over that is probably done by a Western man in a Japanese accent which ties in with the anime theme. On the storyboard sections the characters also speak in a fast, over enthusiastic manner. During gameplay they will throw various insults and shout abuse in true South Park style but they repeat themselves a lot.
Longevity:
There is a respectable amount of content, eleven chapters each with a number of scenarios plus several challenge missions. The achievements will require fast thinking to reach the high end of the rankings and replaying levels to get better scores is an option.
Overall:
South Park Lets Go Tower Defence seems like a game that only fans of the cartoon will fully appreciate and to narrow that down further only those who have played similar games will enjoy this as the action aspect of the game cant hold up by itself. It does become more interesting and less frustrating if playing with human players thanks to more reliable team mates.
