After five Guitar Heroes, a World Tour, Greatest Hits and two named bands, Activision have decided to create a spin-off series that allows the gamer to become a DJ using a turntable (instead of an instrument) to master scratching, cross-fading and sampling. There are over 100 individual songs with most of them blended together to create never-before-released mixes ranging from hip-hop to rock.

This was one game I was looking forward to playing at GamesCom 09 and I was not disappointed. In fact, you would have found it hard to get me away from the game as it was very easy to play but hard to master. The idea of the game is the same as Guitar Hero, you need to press the correct coloured button at the same time you see it cross the line on the screen with the exception of the new feature – Scratching. Since you are now using a turntable, whenever you saw the scratching symbol and colour, you would have to keep the coloured button pressed down as well as move the turntable clockwise and anticlockwise (in other words – up and down) very quickly.
Easy mode used only these two features. Moving up a level, you are than introduced to cross-fading and pitch control. As there are only three buttons, think of the cross-fader as having to use the blue and orange button in Guitar Hero. The cross-fader is simple enough by itself but when you have to scratch and press buttons whilst watching two different lines moving from left to right, it can become a little tricky but saying that, after a few attempts it did become second nature and totally enhanced the gameplay. In fact, I would suggest to anyone who plays to avoid the easy level as you are missing out.

Unfortunately I never got a chance to play at a higher level as they only had easy and medium to hand. According to the rep who was helping members of the public play, this game also allows you to DJ alongside someone else who is on Guitar.
So, what did I think of this game? I loved the new mixes and would gladly buy them if they ever appeared on a cd or download. The controls are simple enough and very addictive, but can you hear that coming, the price is a staggering £100. This includes the turntable controller but considering this is a new franchise, would you buy this hoping that they make a DJ Hero2?
