Delays of video games can happen for a number of reasons which we'll never really know the truth about unless we work in the development studios or publishing companies concerned. However it's safe to say, beyond any tactical delays that with some games the added time affords more spit and polish to be added before the game is released into the wild.

Well according to Ubisoft Montreal and Toronto chief Yannis Mallat, he has mentioned that the delay with Splinter Cell: Conviction was for adding more polish to the game, stating "Splinter Cell: Conviction will be a better game in February than any time earlier," and went on to say "The level of polish that we are achieving as we speak is definitely worth the wait. You know Ubisoft is committed to quality. We apply that to all our games. Splinter Cell is not excluded from that."
Perhaps there were parts of the game the developers or publishers weren't entirely happy with, and considering the huge changes that have been made already, caution is probably wise. With such large amounts of financial investment into game development these days it's worth getting it right first time rather than suffering at the hands of fickle consumers and overzealous press.
Hopefully there will be no further delays and we'll see Sam Fisher arriving on Xbox 360 at the end of February 2010. At least we can be assured that the team working on the game will have provided the best experience possible for fans of the series and newcomers looking for a slice of stealth/action gameplay.
