Munch is back with an all-new mission and he's exclusive to Xbox, In Oddworld: Munch's Oddysee you take on the role of Abe and a new co-star Munch., together you must save the Oddworld Inhabitants. The game commences with some fairly easy training levels, which might lead you to believe that the game is a little on the boring side and doubters might be left wondering about there purchase, 'well don'tö the game soon opens up in the wonders of Oddworld.
The odd world which is Oddworld is a vast an lovely place unless you live there of course but we are just visiting, Oddworld Inhabitants have done an excellent job taking Abe from his 2D platform past and opened up the future with a 3D world to behold, The effects throughout really demonstrate the future which Xbox owners can look forward too from so many future games stunning lighting effects really add atmosphere to the game and at times you may just stop playing and gaze in awe of what the Big Black Box (Xbox) is capable of.
Graphically throughout Oddworld Munch's Oddysee is stunning, one of the most impressive looking elements within the game is the amazing water effects, almost life like. The trees, leaves, hills the whole world, which is Oddworld all receive equal attention to detail form the Inhabitants. Although the game might look a little like a kids game to some doubters this is not the case and will appeal to most age groups, the cut scenes between each level give the game a movie like feel and really set the stage for the level, which awaits.
The main aim of the game is to retrieve the last remaining can of Gabbiar Eggs. This is a Glukkon delicacy. Initially you begin with Abe and as you wonder through the first few levels you learn the skill required to help you in your quest, You travel through the first few levels and soon release munch from his captors at Viykkers Labs, along the way you free fuzzles (a funny little fur ball type character) although not one to be enemies with by all accounts as they can soon become incredibly nasty which is actual good as they are on your side.
Saving fuzzles is an important role throughout the game, saving the furriest little fluff balls in Oddworld actually gives you a good quarma rating (similar to Kudos in Project Gotham) and is a vital part of the game and controls later elements of the game. Overall the rule of thumb is to save and protect as many fuzzles as possible. Another way, which can boost your quarma, as Abe you can rescue Mudoken egg crates, pick them up and drop them down the loading chutes for added quarma As Munch you will need to use cranes to pick up and drop the crates.
The vending machines featured in certain areas are generally there to help and offer Abe or Munch a little special power up, power up's such as Lungbuster, Butt-Flo or Chill Pill are some of the powers vended and which offer your character a little something special such as running faster, jumping higher, health gain to name a few. Although graphically Oddworld Munch's Oddysee is stunning this is not really the main strength of the game the main strength comes in game play and there is plenty within this title. Level after Level all with unique challenges, which will make you; want to keep coming back for more and more and more
The sound effects and audio in general can not be faulted throughout the game although at times the character voices become repetitive and a little annoying, that said this does not mean they are bad just that a little more various would have been nice on the ears. The speech and character interaction creates humour within the game and is often quite amusing, and lets not forget the traditional Burping and Farting, which are always seem to be amusing.
Overall: Controlling Abe and Munch was generally easy and the game does an excellent job of teaching you the controls from the outset (no need to read the instructions hear). I would have to say overall Munch's Oddysee is a game we should all play and judge for ourselves, the game shows off some amazing effects and capabilities of the Xbox console. The puzzles are although increasingly difficult generally easy to work out and progress past, while Oddworld: Munch's Oddysee is not anything amazingly new yet it is a game worthy of out attention, and a game that at times will have you gazing at the TV screen in wonder. The game offers fun with the backing of a great story and blended in with some superb visuals and audio, which all in all I would make me recommend Oddworld Munch's Oddysee.
