Greentown are on the verge of peace with the Tan’s but not everyone wants that especially Colonel Malice and his renegade army. Just as peace is being declared, Malice uses his new weapon of mass destruction and wipes out all the heroes of Greentown except one – Sarge. Bent on revenge for what has happened to his fallen squad, he decides to take on the entire Tan army and to destroy Colonel Malice. Never fight a toy with nothing to lose.
The main content of this game is ‘The Campaign’. A one-player mission set over three acts, each containing multiple missions with each mission spread over several sections. There is the no obligation ‘Boot Camp’, where you can practice everything from running and kneeling to blowing up tanks with bazookas and how to shoot the head off a Tan with a sniper rifle. The last feature included is a Multiplayer game where up to four players can fight it out as individuals or teams. There are three modes to choose from; Death Match, Team Advance and Capture the Flag.
Graphics & Control:
Sarge’s War is a 3rd person shooter with the occasional use of first person perspective when accessing the sniper rifle and bazooka. The graphics are big, bold and sharp with plenty of colour and great dynamic lighting and shadowing. One of the main graphical features is ‘Real Time Destruction’, this is where you can see visible damage such as bullet holes and missing limbs throughout the game play and retain it until you find a medic pack to repair the damage.
No game is good by graphics alone; it needs a simple enough control system to make it feel right. Well, there are no complaints about these controls with every button giving you easy access to fire or throw weapons, kneel, run, jump and move. There is even a lock on target facility, which comes in very handy when all hell is breaking loose.
Sound:
The sound is clear, atmospheric and just right for a war-based game with the voices being very clear to hear. Nuff said.
Longevity:
With only three acts and unlimited number of lives, you could easily finish this game in a day or two. Of course there is always multiplayer with your mates. Unfortunately there is no system link or Live to make this game’s life extend even further.
Round Up:
It looks nice, it plays nicely and it’s short BUT it is a budget title and at £20 it is a steal. If you only wanted to play the single player game, than I would suggest you rent it first as this is probably all the time you are going to need. On the other hand, if you are going to play the multiplayer, than at its very cheap price, this game is a bargain.
Pros:
- Budget title.
- Smooth animation and game play.
- Multi-player action.
Cons:
- No Live
- No System link
- Too short.
