Cel Damage Review:

Please note, this is a hands on experience review and not our final review of this product. Code of games played at the X01 event may not be final.

Cel Damage from Pseudo Interactive was a title on show at X01 that exceeded my expectations. Do you want race the cartoon or almost feel part of the cartoon because if you want to feel part of the Cartoon, Cel Damage is heading you in that direction.

Vehicular combat is nothing new we have all seen and played Wacky Races etc and Cel Shading is another concept which I guess you could say we have been their seen that but Pseudo Interactive have excelled on all fronts with there Wacky and crazy journey into the land of Toon vehicular combat.

Immediately after taking control of my wacky toon I begun to fall into the world with which I was presented, the animation was something that event Disney would have been proud of. The scene was that of the genuine western ghost town which alone was something to behold.

The game features a revolutionary "stretch and squish" physics engine which all in all makes the whole game seem as if all the wild action is actually taking place in an episode of a cartoon rather than within a game, this was simply amazing, the fast fluid animation and crazy smash em up fun. This is truly a fast paced non stop action title with super slick graphics using a state-of-the-art cartoon physics engine to model “realistic” effects and interactive environments which was evident from the time of picking up the controller to the time of putting it back down reluctantly.

The superb and wacky weapons made for a change, I personally enjoyed the mighty Axe and chopping my way through the opponent’s car with sometimes a single CHOP was great fun. The sense of speed and control are very good and the vehicles control extremely well with the Xbox controller. Default settings have the triggers as accelerate and reverse, the left Analog stick steers, while the A button fires. There is not much to worry about control-wise as the game remains simple and easy to pick up.

With the stunning visual experience received I can say that this is almost a must have especially for fans of the genre, with three main modes featured in the game players can: battle race, flag rally, and smack attack. Battle race is the normal mode as seen in previous similar titles such as Mario Kart and Crash Team Racing.

Flag rally is a part a game of capture the flag but has a rather odd and funny feature which is the flag itself is a character, and apparently isn't too fond of the notion of being Captured. “Very Amusing” The flag will actually try to run away if players get too close, “So Catch it if you can”. Smack attack is a standard deathmatch mode but with a differance. It's brings into the equation an fps deathmatch the general idea is to whack or be whacked!! “Remember Roger Rabbit? Well if you dont, basically cartoons don't die”.

Game Features Include:

• Frantic vehicular combat in a cartoon universe.

• Battle it out across 12 interactive cartoon environments set in 4 different themes (Space, Jungle, Desert, Transylvania).

• Smack your opponent’s silly in 3 gameplay modes: Smack Attack, Battle Race and Flag Rally.

• Cruise and bruise in the suped-up rides of the toughest ‘toons around - 6 playable characters with 4 unlockable guest stars.

• Wield a massive chainsaw, giant axe or one of 34 other wild, over-the-top weapons.

• Smash your friends in four-player split-screen action.

Game Modes:

• Smack Attack: This straightforward deathmatch mode challenges each ‘toon to smack the heck out of the other cast members to earn "smack points". The character with most points at the end of the match wins.

• Flag Rally: This is the 'toon version of capture-the-flag. A 'toon must collect four flags and make it to the winner’s circle to be victorious. The catch is that these flags are on the move - as in alive and kickin' on their own two feet, trying to
avoid capture.

• Gate Relay: This is combat racing at its finest. Two checkpoints are set up within the course. The first 'toon to pass each checkpoint five times is the winner. If only it were that easy.

This all adds up to a whole lotta lotta fun, our only concern is the relative lack of environments, 12 with only 4 themes seems a little on the low side but as an initial Xbox title this is quite acceptable, after all there are plenty of game modes to get stuck into and should prove enough of a challenge to keep players going for a fair while.

With the vast array of around 36 weapons at your disposal to try and test and plenty of fast paced all out wacky and Crazy action players will not be disappointed!!! Almost "if not" a must have title but again the lack of environments and themes is the only shame and maybe the only let down within the whole game.
