Whiplash Review:

The animals are striking back !! No longer will they allow themselves to be violated as test subjects, they want freedom….no matter what gets in their way. Taking the spotlight and under the players control are Spanx (the weasel) and Redmond (the hare). These two uncanny creatures, manage to escape whilst shackled together on a production line to be merged together….long story….and their mission is to escape and sabotage the evil animal testing corporation along the way.

Whiplash brings a unique approach to the tag team style of platform gaming. You get to only control Spanx, but as Redmond is attached to Spanx via a chain, you get to use Redmond as a weapon of mass chaos. How ? Well, you see before this two critters escaped they had already been tested on and the side effects are not to be sneezed at. Spanx has wires still attached to his head from his extensive electric shock treatment, which inform him when security is nearby, very handy when moving around the complex. As for Redmond, well, the poor little bunny, oops I mean hare, is a result of some embarrassing cosmetic testing leaving his fur as hard as diamond. This damage to his fur is used to its full effect when Spanx swings Redmond via the chain as a sledgehammer. Not only does Spanx use Redmond as a weapon, but also as a tool in helping free the other enslaved animals by turning him into a ‘Hare Clog’, ‘Flaming Fur Ball’, ‘Toxic Bunny’ and many other unique items.

Your other objective whilst escaping is to cause as much damage to the complex in the hopeful outcome of the evil company going bankrupt. Now, when we say destroy everything, I mean…destroy everything. From security cameras to file cabinets and anything else you can see, every little bit of damage moves the company a step closer to going bankrupt.

Graphics & Control:

The graphics are very cute and funny, with the two lead characters well portrayed especially when Spanx uses Redmond as a weapon. The scenery is totally destructible, which allows you to ‘Cut Loose’ and inflict more damage on the company. Unfortunately the controls for the game are a bit on the akward side. Not so much the movement but the way the camera works around your character. It doesn’t harm the game to the point where you just can not play, but it does spoil it a little.

Sound:

One of the main features of this game is ‘Humour’. Seeing that Spanx doesn’t say anything, all the one liners and conversation comes from the smart-aleck hare. The comical cut-scenes are great as well as the tiny details, like the cafeteria P.A. announcing the special deals for the day.

Longevity:

This game seems to be massive, with each room consisting of several sub missions to continue forward onto your next goal, but the way to complete each mission does not vary enough and it does become quite repetitive.

Round Up:

Overall, it is a fun game to play and a welcome change from the norm and if it wasn’t for the awkward camera angles, it would have been a top class game instead of an above average game. Rent it out, but believe me when I say, you will not finish it in one session (unless of course you don’t sleep.)

Pros:

  • Excellent animation and graphics
  • Humour
  • Cute Animals !!

    Cons:

    • Camera Angles
    • Repetitive fighting.
