Outlaw Volleyball Review:

Outlaw Golf brought some well needed humour into the world of golfing. With its ease of play and quirky oddball characters Outlaw Golf is a good golf game with some serious undertones, namely in the game play. Well it looks like those oddball characters have made a welcome return alongside some new buddies as well. Lets play volleyball!

Outlaw Volleyball combines the game of volleyball with adult humour. With a cast of wacky stereotyped characters, ranging from hillbilly, biker-babe, hooligan to pole dancer and many more. These characters each have a unique personality which at times will have you falling about with laughter or simply looking on in disbelief wondering " Did she really just say/ do that"? Every character has numerous comments to make between plays including the crazy announcer, which in its strange way begins to form a picture of the characters themselves.

So to the volleyball itself. The events are exhibition match or the massive tour mode. The latter sees you choosing two characters then progressing through various tournaments of increasing difficulty. Also included is an excellent mini game system which is incorporated into the tour mode. Each character starts with basic stats in the tour mode. This means that by completing the mini games you can then assign points to your characters stats, thus making your team better in the world tour events. More mini games are unlocked as you win events. Worth noting here as replay value, is that every character has to complete these mini games if you want to build their stats up. This can take quite some time especially when you have unlocked new characters who also need their stats built.

So you have chosen your duo to do battle on the numerous them ed courts. Well if you had taken time to watch the amusing video tutorial and completed the first batch of mini games, then controlling your team will be a lot easier. If you have played any tennis/ volleyball game before then the control scheme is pretty much identical. Diagonal directions on either the stick or d-pad will result in well placed shots to the edges near and far from the net, depending. You have 3 main forms of button combinations depending on if you are receiving the ball or attacking. Once you learn to utilize all three buttons then your play will improve. The actual game play here is pretty good to begin with as the CPU is a reasonable challenge. However later on the CPU begins to show its true colours. The problem lies in the fact that the CPU can see exactly where you are going to place a shot before you make it. An option you have yourself in exhibition mode. However in the tour mode the option to see your opponents shots is gone, resulting in unfair play. It will take the patience of a world class sniper to beat the latter stages here. Also as you progress through the world tour the match types change accordingly. For example there are timed matches, team timer matches and bomb match types. All these add some variation on the basic game of volleyball, which are fun against humans and less fun against the CPU.

Thankfully this game is Xbox Live supported, which means you can test your skills against others worldwide. Also new characters can be downloaded as they become available. My only gripe with the Live play is the fact that you could not host 2 vs 2 matches with 3 other Xboxs.

Outlaw Volleyball is a good game and is also rather funny. It looks pretty fresh too with some great character models on display. The ability to use custom soundtracks is a welcome addition. As mentioned before my only gripe with the game play is the CPU difficulty in the latter stages of the tour mode which will mean many players wont get to use all of the characters available. The live play is a great move and makes up for the CPU difficulty. As an all out volleyball game Outlaw Volleyball delivers and is worth getting. A solid title.
