Cel Damage Review:

Cel Damage is literally what it says it does, it’s made out of cel-shaded graphics and all about causing maximum damage and all in a car. Cel Damage looks like a bit of alternative gaming…

Gameplay:
Cel Damage is supposedly based on a TV show where there are 6 contestants in an arena in customised cars and they’re all out to cause as much damage to each other whether it’s a chainsaw, baseball bat or even a hoover! The game is split up into 3 main modes: smack attack, gate relay and flag rally all of which aren’t that fun surprisingly enough, smack attack is the only really appealing mode to play in as it’s basically a death match. This is good as many options are customisable including how many ‘smacks’ you need to win, weapons allowed and so on. Gate relay is fairly boring as you only have to drive in between a set of gates before the other competitors do and is a little frustrating and boring, flag rally is as equally as boring as you have to collect 4 flags and bring them to the winners circle this is easier than it sounds as all 4 flags can be any where in the arena and can be in the possession of other competitors and takes a long time to get anywhere.
So in the main modes of play the game has little to offer as far as smack attach goes there is little to it really –drive around find a weapon, kill or die and keep going until you win. After an extensive play session with cel damage I was finding it was becoming repetitive, yes the game has a few varied characters and locations to play with but fact is they are practically all the same the cars don’t handle different and the arenas are basically places to drive with scenery. Although there are a couple of good points to the gameplay, the game always has a comic sense even the graphics make the game look like a cartoon, characters will taunt other players and jump about in their cars with joy or anger. The arenas do have jumps, teleporters and swamps, even sheep on one level which u can chop, grind or blow up with hilarious consequences.
The game is very easy to control and anyone can pick up and play. If you get killed in the game you are instantly brought into action through a dropping wooden crate, the weapons are fun and great to use but they could have done with a few more and a bit more variety. To me the game is more suitable for multiplayer sessions as the game allows 4 player split screen play and the gameplay will only last and hour or twos playtime, if you come back there’s only the multiplayer aspect as there are only character movies to watch otherwise that’s it.

Graphics:
The graphics in cel damage are very nice looking; they are very smooth with no slowdown whatsoever and are very suited to the comic style approach the game offers. Although not very many special effects are offered throughout the game, but they have been kept simple and they look great as they are.

Sound:
Because the game is very cartoon based there is a large assortment of sound effects that you may hear in any modern cartoon, which suits the game well as the effects are needed for all the weapons sounds mainly. The music in the game has all been produced in house and doesn’t sound bad but perhaps a little more thought could have gone in the have produced a better sounding game it’s not too bad at the moment but neither is it great.

Longevity:
Unfortunately because of the way the game has been made there’s little to it really with 3 main modes of play, 2 of which that will bore you to death in a few minutes that means there’s only the smack attack mode which is any fun really and with only 16 arenas until you’re finished the game hardly seems worth a purchase as far as single player gaming goes. Cel damage is more of a multiplayer party type game, which is good as the Xbox needs one but a better single player mode and a load of extras thrown in and the game would have seemed more appealing.

Round Up:
Cel damage is a fairly good try at an original game as cel shading and driving games are rarely done and the game isn’t too bad but because pf many pieces of bad planning and construction of cel damage what should have been a meaty game is now a couple of chicken wings in reality. Rent it or buy it if you want to have some great Xbox multiplayer fun with a few friends, but do not buy this game based on single player mode you will be severely disappointed.

Pros:

  • Well designed and made cel shaded graphics
  • Original concept for a game
  • Can be quite comical at times

    Cons:

    • Lack of modes to keep you playing
    • Gets repetitive fairly easily
    • Should have been much, much more
