Wreckless Review:

Wreckless was one of the first titles to come out on the Xbox, and is yet another driving title to add to the large library that the Xbox possesses. Is Wreckless a game we all should’ve bought by now or is it a driving game that should be left in the glove box?

Gameplay:
Wreckless is sets you in either 2 scenarios (You can choose), you are either a secret services agent or a spy and the game is played by going through mission by mission. Whether it is destroying a dump truck and then going to a top of a car park to escape by helicopter or even a simple destruction derby type mission. So there is variation but some mission become extremely hard to do even on normal difficulty on passing some missions you are rewarded with cars some of which are very nice I might add. However there are things that the gameplay offers which spoils little of what is already on offer the physics of the game for instance isn’t what you’d normally find in a racing game cars roll and turn over too easily mainly due to the fact that the cars all react is if they are bouncy which makes getting from a to b a lot harder. A lot of explosions and debris are common items you come across in the game mainly because you hit them and makes driving and seeing a lot harder, it’s nice that the scenery can be smashed to pieces too but when it effects the driving in the game it gets annoying there really should have been less of this to help you drive in the game. The controls in the game are great and are easy to use with the typical driving control pad layout used. Only critical point I would have here is there’s no button to look behind you which would’ve been handy really.

Graphics:
Graphically the game looks very nice and has had several special effects added to it, most of which are used in the games replays such as motion bur and heat effects. Some effects on the other hand can be annoying it really depends how you like your game to look if you like your game to have good graphics and nothing but you might get a little frustrated by the graphics that have been implemented in Wreckless, however if you’re open to new ideas this is certainly your thing, this showing that Activision have been tampering with the Xboxes capabilities and coming out with varied results by the look of it. But everything is highly detailed and is getting close to the boundary of realistic, very good.

Sound:
Little has been done sound wise your average sound line-up has been used as a few original soundtracks have been created, including very fast energetic music mainly suitable for the game but I would’ve liked to have some of my own music on whilst I am speeding round the city smashing the crap out of other cars and the like.

Longevity:
Very little to keep you going here unfortunately as you’re simply given scenario A and Scenario B with a fair amount of missions in each the mission vary in difficulty by maybe too much as you will get very easy missions to the near impossible missions. Otherwise there’s no multiplayer and the only things you can unlock are the cars. Something that can be easily done within a rental with enough patience.

Round Up:
The game is a brilliant concept and does excel in one or two areas but it’s lacking in more than a couple of areas, mainly the longevity of it as there’s only 2 small scenarios to play through. The game is made fun by racing fast and even sometimes wacky cars to go through missions, which are sometimes well thought out. Perhaps if the game had a multiplayer mode or co-op mode along with better thought out missions it might have been worth a purchase, however the game still has it’s fun so go and rent it and smash crap up!

Pros:

  • Really great looking graphics
  • Great concept for a game and pulled off fairly well
  • Some nice cars

    Cons:

    • Little to play with really – only 2 scenarios, that’s it!
    • Missions need better thinking out
    • Physics are a little weird
