Falcone: Into The Maelstrom has one the most interesting ideas for a storyline and the gameplay for a long time, it's original and that's what the Xbox needs originality in it's games, not some sequel upon sequel. Fair enough if the game can repeat it's success but as far as the PS2 goes it's sequel city and that just doesn't work for me. Falcone: Into The Maelstrom brings elements from other games and creates a thoroughly original title from first impressions.
The story in Falcone: Into The Maelstrom has been penned by Judge Dredd writer, Robbie Morrison and goes like this; you are part of one of two warring pirate bands battling for control of deep space, yes that's right I said 'space pirates'! Everyday you fight for areas of space to control and naturally everyone wants their own piece of territory too. You fight for areas of turf against massive convoys of dreadnoughts in spectacular dogfights in your own combat fighters. Another aspect of the game involves you breaching other ships and stealing their cargo in a first person perspective once you've managed to destroy the ships defenses and comes in the form of 20 unique missions. So in a nutshell we have a space combat game and a first person shooter combined into one title and to say the least that adds a nice bit of longetivity to the game.
But rather than going from level to level, ship to ship and more and more treasure the game adds something more to keep you glued to your Xbox control pad. As you progress through the game, depending on which pirate band you play for your reputation will increase, especially if you complete the more difficult missions. You will be able to recruit new members to your team, along with having more help for missions they will be able to use they expertise in different fields such as computer hacking, explosives or assasin so teamwork can end up to be vital. To add to the fun there will be 5 multiplayer maps which will be available to be played in split-screen or online when released. As far as graphics and artwork goes, Falcone: Into the Maelstrom's uniquely styled world has been designed and created by Batman and Judge Dredd artist, Jim Murray. All the pirate characters, and their robot adversaries are modeled and animated so that game has a comic-book look to it. And to add to all of this the game engine runs off of the 'Unreal Tournament' made by Epic, powering the visuals, offering a graphical enjoyment throughout the game.
Falcone: Into The Maelstrom seems to have a lot going for it a good games engine, original gameplay, specialized cartoon graphics and a lot of replay value and looks quite interesting to play and will offer an extensive challenge for the casual gamer.
