Racing. You need cars for that, don’t you? No. This is combat platform racing. On foot. Strange? Yup, but it promises to be a real blast. Coming from the brains of developers Crystal Dynamics, MDR pits you in a race for survival in a richly coloured cartoon world in races against some truly wacky opponents. You’ll have a variety of moves at hand and a special move from the three available; dash bash or glide. Each one has its own specific strengths and weaknesses and will provide you with shortcuts, power ups and secret areas.
The tracks are littered with numerous amounts of goodies to pick up and use against your opponents and the option to set traps is also open to (ab)use. The nine characters available all come complete with their own personality and abilities which you will use to finish first in all eight levels including volcanic areas, forest and snowy ski slopes. The levels themselves are rich in colour and contain loads of things to catch your eye (and body) with, such as huge balls of molten lava falling from the sky, giant man-eating plants or deep sticky tar pits.
Throughout the single player game you will encounter two (obligatory) bosses who need to be defeated in order to progress and will hopefully be as large, impressive and as much a challenge as the levels seen so far. Blazing a trail through the levels is expected then, but what about the opponents you are up against? Be devious my child, be as cunning as a fox and deadly as a cobra. Trap ‘em, blow ‘em up with TNT, set a boulder to roll down a hill and crush ‘em. I recommend watching piles of Road Runner cartoons prior to playing to give you the inspiration you need. It promises to be very, very manic. Extra touches include the ability to download secret characters and tracks to increase the game’s longevity.
Smooth & ultra-fast four player split screen action is included too, “Superior four-player game speed” says Glen Schofield, Vice President/Director at Crystal Dynamics. And who are we to argue? As long as it delivers what has been promised, MDR should be great fun to play alone or with friends. Depending on how much you smell, obviously.
