Transworld Surf Preview:
Surfing. Way of life or just good fun? Either, neither or both? Regardless, Transworld Surf is being released on X-Box, this march. Anyone remember California Games? Remember the surfing mini game? Yeah, I do. The best representation of the sport to date. Will TWS be able to better the timelessness of CG’s surfing game? Reckon. You’ve seen the screenshots and you’ll have to admit, it looks pretty tasty. The developers at Angel Studios have taken great lengths to make the game look and feel as realistic as possible, and so far, it seems to have worked. Coming complete with the best looking waves and water effects, there are loads of other special touches such as shadows, lighting and particle effects galore.

Impressively, the game looks set to have lots of features to back up the great visuals, and you’ll be living the lifestyle in the game. Taking control of 13 real life pro’s, including Rochelle Ballard, Shawn Barron, Taj Burrow, Jason Collins, Tim Curran, Shane Dorian, Christian Fletcher, Andy Irons, Taylor Knox, Cory Lopez, Dan Malloy, Fred Pattachia and Chris Ward. Each of these will have signature moves and abilities unique to that character to give added replay value and depth of gameplay. You’ll visit ten locations including Todos Santos (Baja California, USA), Huntington Beach (California, USA), Pipeline and Backdoor (Hawaii), Hossegor (France), Kirra Point (Queensland, Australia), Jeffries Bay (South Africa), Witches Rock (Costa Rica), Tavarua (Fiji), G Land (East Java, Indonesia), Teahupoo (Tahiti) and a secret bonus location so you’re sure to find your favourite break and start racking up the score!

The game includes a very interesting feature called the Karma Meter which allows you to affect random game-play factors by interacting with obstacles such as other surfers, photographers, body boarders, dolphins and more. If your Karma Meter gets too low however, you’ll be open to a possible shark attack. This makes gameplay tense and exciting without being frustrating. Interacting with scenery is a large part of TWS, and to complete levels you’ll have to overcome certain goals such as shooting a pier, grinding boats, tagging rocks and more. The best bit about the game is having your best trick photographed and slapped on the cover of Transworld Surf Magazine. Pull your biggest and best trick after finding the sweet spots for trick photography and a ‘CLICK’ you’ll be immortalised as a surfing god forever. Well, until you pull a better one anyway!

Overall, TWS looks like it could be a sleeper hit. All signs point to it being a great game and I see no reason why it shouldn’t redefine the stale and lifeless genre of videogame surfing. Roll on March and keep your eyes peeled!
