The Predator movie featuring good old Arnold Schwarzenegger was a huge hit when it was released way back in 1987. With its jungle vibe and unrivalled special effects at the time it was clear to see that there were more good scripts and movies other than the hugely popular Aliens. With its blend of stealth, terror and awesome weaponry we saw with our own eyes how effective the Predator was as a hunting machine. Although sadly, not quite tough enough to take care of Arnold in the movie the fighting was top notch and highly entertaining for the millions of people who have seen this movie.
A sequel was produced in 1990 starring Danny Glover as the tough guy cop in a city almost in anarchy, as gang wars reached an all time high. This urban setting was a stark contrast to the jungles of the first film and in many ways should have been more enjoyable. Sadly for me it wasn’t as some dry dialogue made the film more of a gimmick with none of the charm and spontaneity of its predecessor.
Predator hasn’t been a stranger to video games and has in fact appeared in quite a few. The most successful of those have been the Alien verses Predator games on PC which offer players the chance to go head to head with Aliens and Marines. Xbox has seen one Predator game which was a real time strategy affair and frankly not as good as it should have been. Well hopefully Xbox will finally get a Predator game worthy of praise as Predator: Concrete Jungle is released at the end of March.
Predator Concrete Jungle promises third person action as you the player become the Predator. The story promises to be intense and equally engaging. The game begins to tell the tale of the Predators alien history on Earth and evolves through several time periods, starting in the 1930’s and then in the 2030s. It seems an organized crime empire and its leader has waged war on alien beings and aims to see their total destruction. Your job as the lone Predator is to hunt down the crime lords and conquer them before they attempt to conquer you, using all the skills that you expect from a Predator.
The unique vision modes as seen in the movies will be available to players to use at their disposal. The famous Thermal scan is included as well as Neuro scan, Prey scan and finally Tech scan which will aid you in your quest for the city’s most wanted. Weaponry will also be lifted from the movies and will include the awesome wrist blades, plasma caster, combi stick, spear gun and smart disk; which as you know can cut a man in two. What is more, the ever so useful cloaking will be available to players, offering the chance to really stalk your prey across the vast urban settings.
Predator: Concrete Jungle sounds like a promising title if it can deliver what has been promised. The screenshots available at this time look promising and only time will tell once a few movies or a demo is available if this game will cut it in a very over crowded genre. Hopefully the developers will do the licence proud and not opt to go for a cheap cash in on the name with a generic 3rd person title. If the game play remains tight, and true to the movies and is as good as it sounds on paper, then I think we could have a rather cool game here.
