Timesplitters Future Perfect Preview:
The Timesplitters games have been renowned for their swift, fast paced action orientated multiplayer modes which lets face it , usually offers a lot more long term replay than a generic story mode added to simply try and please the story mode first person players or keep up with the other games in this crowded genre. Well the original game first appeared as one of the early PS2 titles and whilst it was a solid game, was hampered by not having a comprehensive story mode. Instead it opted for themed levels which you simply went from A to B with the minimum amount of fuss.

Timesplitters 2 was the aptly titled follow up and addressed the issue of the story mode being more like an actual adventure even though the levels displayed the same traits as its predecessor; using themed levels throughout history and the future. The multiplayer remained Timesplitters 2 biggest and perhaps best feature as players could unlock lots of characters to use or employ as bots on a number of excellent maps.

Well its 2005 and the team at Free Radical are almost ready to unleash the next instalment to the series. Make way for Timesplitters 3 Future Perfect. In TimeSplitters Future Perfect, it seems that victory is in the hands of the player's past, present, and future self. No, this is not Michael J Fox in Back to the Future, but a return of the protagonist from the previous game, Cortez. The battle this time stretches throughout time where humanity is on the brink of destruction from those pesky TimeSplitters once more. Cortez finds himself in a frantic race against time as he tries to discover the source of the Timesplitters and ultimately save mankind from doom!

Of course this is just the story mode, which we are promised is a lot more comprehensive and linked this time round. The game’s story is set between the years 1914 - 2401 and players will be able to ally themselves to their past, present and future selves. Whilst this may sound rather complicated I can assure you that it’s not, and hopefully will offer some compelling game play moments.

Also players will be able to participate in the games story mode as a co-op team, where they can work together to complete objectives. This is something that was absent from previous installments and hopefully should make the game a lot more fun. Whether this will be an option over Xbox Live is yet to be seen.

The awesome arcade and challenge modes make a welcome return and I’m sure the completion of these modes will be key to unlocking the huge roster of characters available for multiplayer. In fact we are promised hundreds of unlockables in this game which I’m sure will be incorporated in the best way possible if previous Timesplitters games are anything to go by. The multiplayer alone or with friends is perhaps one of the best on the system in terms of variety and it looks like Timesplitters 3 sets to continue this. As a new venture for the game is the inclusion of Xbox Live play which I’m sure will be an absolute blast. Up to 16 players will be able to team up or go head to head against human and bot adversaries.

The map making also sees a welcome return and whilst its inclusion in previous games was rather limited, the inclusion this time with the added Xbox Live service will mean that players will be able to create maps and then play with others around the world on their created master piece. We are promised that the map making will be easy to use and full of features that will have bedroom mappers working all hours to get that perfect map made.

TimeSplitters Future Perfect promises to be one of the great arcade first person shooters released this year. Whether it will rival the greatness that is Halo 2 or the forthcoming Rainbow six: Lockdown is yet to be seen but with hundreds of unlockables, more realistic environments, spectacular special effects, high quality animated cut scenes, an improved physics engine, smarter enemy AI, and much more to boot. We can only wait and see if this true next generation title delivers on all fronts. Timesplitters 3 Future Perfect is released on the 9th of March in the US and slightly later on the 26th of March for Europeans.
