Not content with providing us gamers with light sabre action Lucas Arts have teamed up with Pandemic Studios of Full Spectrum Warrior fame to bring Mercenaries to Xbox loving gamers. The premise of Mercenaries is to go and kill a wide number of vicious foes using the deck of cards method as seen being used by the US in most recent times.
The story is as follows and is based on fictional yet inspired by real world events. North Korea and South Korea have forgotten their past grievances and have teamed up in the country’s more peaceful times. However this tranquility can’t last as an evil general intent on destruction stages a military coup then threatens the world with Nukes. World governments are called to set up a diplomatic force with the intent of dealing with this issue; however it fails as the general seems more intent on his own Ideals than negotiating. The threat of Nuclear War and the destruction of the country creates mass panic and fear as both North and South Korea turns into complete anarchy. With little options left open to them the governments of the World place a bounty on this general, which is where we fit it. Using the 52 deck of cards as seen after the iraq war players take on the role of Merc as they hunt down these most wanted criminals and ultimately toppling the deranged general from power.
Mercenaries is a third person action game where player get to perform a wide number of tasks during the game. What separates Mercenaries from other 3rd person games is the fact that players will be able to roam freely across vast terrains whilst also being able to commandeer up to 20 different civilian/ military Land, and Air based vehicles. This means that tanks, trucks and helicopters to name a few are all up for the taking should you so choose. What is more players will be able to interact with the environment in ways that other games simply cant offer such as seeing a building and then blowing it up. That’s right in Mercenaries if you see it then you can steal it, use it or simply demolish it.
What is also promised is a wide range of weaponry and explosives to take out those who oppose you and those who are part of the 52 deck of cards. The usual suspects will be there such as machine guns, rifles etc but the feeling of gunning down dug in enemies in a copter or simply blowing them all up is a prospect I am definitely looking forward to.
Other game play elements included are various factions that you can seek employment seeing as you are a mercenary after all. These factions can open up new areas and provide useful information in helping to catch the most wanted criminals. What is also interesting are the journalists who are scattered across the environments. Their task is to simply take notes of your actions which in turn affects the way people and the factions deal with you in general. I assume acting over zealously will cause a disliking for you amongst others which may make your job in finding the 52 wanted criminals much more difficult.
Mercenaries also features a trading system whereby players earn money for completing any number of wide and diverse assignments. This money can then be used to purchase equipment and vehicles or players can sell unwanted vehicles and items to the games black market traders.
From what we’ve seen of this game looks rather promising indeed. If Pandemic can produce another hit following the success of Full Spectrum Warrior then rest assured we are all in for a treat. So far there has been little talk of any multiplayer or Xbox Live features so we will have to keep our eyes open for any new information that surfaces. Either way regardless of multiplayer and Live Mercenaries looks to be a great game to add to the roster of titles set to appear at the end of this year and the beginning of next.
