Goldeneye, Goldeneye, Goldeneye what are we going to do with you? Since the movie release in the 90’s and subsequent game on the then most powerful console on Earth the name has been synonymous with First person action and James Bond. For many the Rare created title was a first introduction to first person shooters for the masses and perhaps paved the way for many of today’s outings. As a benchmark title of its time and still regarded as such today the name Goldeneye will bring a smile to the faces of those who remember it fondly. Ok, stop the violins, roses and water bearing maidens for a second and let’s have a reality check if you don’t mind.

Since EA purchased the licence to produce James Bond games several years ago we have seen a wide number of Bond games. While all have been multi format titles with no special attention paid to the Xbox version the games have never really been able to capture the imaginations of the gaming press and hardcore gaming fraternity. With Agent Under fire being the first and perhaps weakest of the 3 titles followed by a similar by slightly better Nightfire. These first person titles delivered the bond experience but were missing something. Many will argue that Goldeneye’s multiplayer was a big draw for a lot of players and recognize that EA’s efforts simply haven’t matched or re-created the same buzz.

In a brave move to perhaps try and re invent the series EA went all out 3rd person for their next game Everything or Nothing (EON). This approached worked extremely well, as the game offered a cinematic experience that the previous games couldn’t offer. However, being 3rd person meant that although it was very much Bond it wasn’t Goldeneye. Well EA have gone back to the drawing board and returned to first person for another crack at creating the definitive Bond game for this generation of consoles. In a move that perhaps has angered the N64 loving masses, EA has focused on going head to head with Goldeneye by announcing Goldeneye: Rogue Agent. Now whether this is simply marketing at work or a genuine attempt at making Goldeneye the name on everyone lips once more is unknown so let’s have a look at what the game has to offer.

Goldeneye Rogue Agents biggest draw happens to be a smart twist to the tale as in this game you no longer take on the role of super smooth guy James Bond but instead another operative (gasp). Here is the story: As a darker motivated 00 agent in UK’s MI6 branch you are disqualified and dismissed after acts of brutality not tolerated by your superiors. Out of the loop and looking for a new home you are recruited by an Auric Goldfinger (a character from one of the films) who is currently at war with another of the films villains Dr No.

In a confrontation with Dr No you end up losing an eye. However Goldfinger’s technicians replace it with a gold-hued, synthetic eye, which earns you the name, 'GoldenEye'. As one of Goldfinger’s henchmen and facing off against past villains your aim is to rise the ranks to become the ultimate and most feared of them all.

Goldeneye Rogue Agent promises a single player campaign, split screen play as well as full multiplayer options including Xbox Live support for the first time. The multiplayer aspect producing death match style simulator trials, and objective-based team war games to sink your teeth into.

The Single player campaign will offer players the chance to perform player upgrades whereby players will be able to form their own villain personas. Upgrading the synthetic eye in a variety of ways will produce even more ways to create havoc and destruction upon your enemies as you progress through the game. Were also promised an in depth AI system whereby enemies will react to your actions and their surroundings with a level of realism not seen in previous Bond games. The developer’s aims are to create unpredictable and realistic gun battles with intelligent foes for the maximum in adrenaline fueled game play.

Players will also get to visit famous and original Bond locations such as the mountains of Switzerland to the streets Hong Kong and from Fort Knox to Dr. No's Crab Key lair in the Caribbean. Best of all players will be able to battle past villain from the movies such as Jaws, Oddjob and Pussy Galore to name a few.

Well it all sounds like a promising title and if the missions are varied enough and the multiplayer more in depth than previous attempts then EA could be onto a winner. Whether Rogue Agent has as many fans as the original Goldeneye, is yet to be seen, however I think that with the new Villain formula EA have adopted then they could produce a title here that is good anyway, regardless of the name. My only reservations are that its release is when competition is going to be stiff (i.e November). Let’s just hope Rogue Agent can add something that the other games simply can’t offer.
