Sega’s classic ultra smooth arcade driving game makes a welcome return after a hefty absence from both arcades and consoles. Featuring all of the elements that made the original such a joy to play Outrun 2 promises a fresh driving experience when it is released later this year exclusive to Xbox.
We are promised more of the same game play which if you are unfamiliar with the aged classic comprises of checkpoint street racing, through busy traffic. The onus being on driving swiftly and smoothly whilst keeping your timer active by passing through checkpoints. This may seem pretty easy but it’s not when your timer is fast approaching zero and your metres away from the next checkpoint. This Forces you to adopt some cool and very calculated driving manoeuvres to impress your female passenger so she won’t leave. It’s tough being a flashy dude with a nice car and hot chick by your side.
OutRun 2 offers two main modes of arcade influenced game play which are Heart Attack and Time Attack, the former being a variation on the time attack theme I assume. Players will get to drive a whole host of officially endorsed Ferrari vehicles which include an Enzo Ferrari, Dino 246 GTS, 365 GTS/4 Daytona, Testarossa, 360 Spider, 288 GTO, F40 and F50.All vehicles handle differently and display varying strengths and weaknesses.
One of the main features of the original arcade classic was the track designs, as players were able to pick different routes throughout the game. Well were promised more of the same except bigger better and far more detailed than ever before. More than 15 tracks are set against spectacular massive environments inspired from locations throughout the world including an ancient desert, snowy mountains, foggy hills and a tropical city.
Out Run 2 offers to give the Xbox Live masses a run for its money as well by offering full Live support. This means players will be able to race head to head with others across the globe. A comprehensive stats feature will also be available where players can upload/download other players’ ghosts to compare or race against.
Out Run 2 promises to offer a fresh, stylish and challenging driving experience when it finally gets released later this year. If it can recapture the magic of past days with a comprehensive music track or custom soundtracks option and keep the varied game play elements then I think Sega will have pulled it off in reviving the series for next generation consoles.
