Playstation 2 had Solid Snake, the main man as far as stealth games are concerned. With his action stealth sequences on board that tanker in New York and the Chemical clean up facility The Big Shell no one could really come close to the big man. Games such as Tenchu Stealth Assassins tried to add some classic ninja action to the genre but failed to captivate audiences with its more recent release on the PS2. Then appearing out of the shadows so to speak was a new stealth orientated action game exclusive for Xbox owners, namely Splinter Cell. Prior to its release there was a huge buzz going around the gaming community as this new hero Sam Fisher was the name on most gamers lips. The early reports of the game in the form of screen shots portrayed Sam as an operative who really knew his stuff. Some of the gadgets that were on show proposed to offer some highly entertaining and innovative game play elements, such as the optic cable for viewing potential threats through doors and what was to become almost like Sam’s gadget of choice, the night vision goggles with its distinctive gray hues.
Almost perpetuating the rivalries between Xbox, Gamecube and PS2 owners that initially the game wasn’t planned for immediate release on anything other than Xbox. Arguments were fought regarding issues of the graphical effects not being able to be produced on any other console. Splinter Cell was definitely another potentially massive killer title that Xbox owners so desperately needed.
Splinter Cell was finally released in the US on the 17th of November of last year to much delight of Xbox owners. With it's refreshing and more stealth orientated game play compared to the arcade style of Metal Gear Solid , Splinter Cell was an immediate hit. With the use of some unrivalled lighting effects using the famous Unreal engine Splinter Cell was a major leap forward for stealth games.
Many players across the board, even now were taken in by Sam’s hide and seek antics and of course those real world gadgets. Even Hideo Kojima (the creator of the Metal Gear series) was praising of the game. With the love affair well into its honeymoon period Splinter Cell was finally announced for all formats and later appeared on the PC, PS2 and the Gamecube. However Xbox owners had an advantage if they subscribed to Microsoft’s Xbox Live service in the form of new missions as downloadable content which most definitely added some extra replay value to the game almost a year after its initial release.
Sam Fisher makes a welcome return next year on all formats with the release of Splinter Cell: Pandora Tomorrow. This all new adventure will once again have Sam traverse the globe doing what he does best. Infiltration while remaining undetected. It appears that this time some of the locations will be more varied than before with less emphasis on urban settings. We are also promised even better graphics and a more engrossing cinematic feel to the game. However the biggest news is the fact that Splinter Cell Pandora Tomorrow will feature never seen before online multi player modes, including co-op play. This has got many of us drooling in anticipation at the possibilities that this style of play could create. Imagine a four man team of special operatives infiltrating a terrorist filled complex, having to use advanced team tactics to achieve goals. Or stealth based death match and team death match modes. This is really going to be a game to look forward to that offers something different compared to all of those first person shooters that are coming next year. Penciled in for a release in the US as early as March of next year hopes are extremely high for this game.
