Welcome to the mystical world of Dungeons & Dragons Heroes, a world which as you would think full of magical creatures, spells, wizards, swords and sorcery a game in which up to 4 players in split screen can play simultaneously and hack and slash there way through the dungeons laid out before them in search of Wizard Kaedin, D&G as we shall now refer to the game takes you on a journey through the world of the classic Dungeons & Dragons roleplaying game where you are the hero and can live like a hero.
In D&G you assume the role of one of four available player types, which are Fighter, Rogue, Wizard or Cleric each with there own attributes, skills and weapons. D&G is played from a top down perspective reminiscent of games such as Gauntlet, graphically the game is up to spec with some very nice textures and effects such as the spells which when cast are a gorgeous screen lightening face smiling joy to behold and most especially the water which is as realistic as in any other xbox title to date.
The main focus of the game is combat and character development, The Hero (that’s you) sets of on a quest to collect all the Planar Gems which are scattered around the levels and remove the evil forces of Wizard Kaedin that threatens to end life as it is known.
The heroes journey although linear is a lengthy one into the depths of castle baele and then onward into the wizard Kaedins’s fortress who has been restored to life by a band of clerics wishing to control the evil wizard only to be turned on and killed by him, in your quest you must first retrieve 5 planar gems which open the worlds that take you to your ultimate goal and challenge of the evil wizard. The story is driven nicely along by some very nice cut scenes guiding you, teaching you and helping you understand the reason for each of the quests to partake in before your search reaches a climax and you confront the Evil Wizard.
Throughout your journey you will be rewarded with various items such as gold (used to buy healing potions, raise-dead amulets which restore full health instantly during battle with a quick tap of the black button, mystical will and various potions), skeleton keys (used to open doors, chests gates and such like). As you proceed you shall also be rewarded with experience points and will develop your characters key abilities making him or her into a near indestructible force.
The atmospherics of the game are very nicely done using both graphical effects and music to create the right atmosphere at the right time, often music changes to a darker more sinister type as you wonder unwittingly into danger. The controls are also very good, you have a melee button, 2 secondary attacks, throw button, a Mana and Power potion, the coolest is the R trigger, it acts as a slow down time button so you can map out your skills to the X, Y and B buttons Heroes controls very fluid and add to the overall experience.
Overall Dungeons & Dragons Heroes is great fun and fans of both D&G and the genre will be plesently pleased with the whole experience.
