Multiplayer Tips
Warzone, Execution and Wingman
Gears, being the cover based shooter that it is, is reliant on you not running out their and getting killed or downed. Instead, you're encouraged to remain in cover as much as possible, the winning team will always be the more co-ordinated team, the team with the plan, the team that can think on their feet - this applies to pretty much everything in Gears 2, and specifically the team deathmatch variations of Warzone, Execution and Wingman. The key here is to not break away from the pack (especially in Wingman seeing as it consists of teams of only 2 players), if playing solo in Public matches try to tag along with a small group instead of the lone gunman that wonders off by himself, as he will likely wind up dead anyway, as he's more interested in getting the "cool" weapon on the map than he is in winning the round. The weapons are something to take notice of as well, be sure to learn the weapon spawning locations on the maps, more often than not at least one player from the opposing team will make a rush for a high profile weapon. If you continue to move about as a squad, then that player will be easy pickings to eliminate. Though, an entire team may even rush a specific weapon location, and there's typically two good weapon spawns per map, at least. So, many teams will break up their full squad to acquire and rush all the power weapons in one fell swoop. If they get a hold of all of these, you're practically as good as dead (provided they have an idea of how to use them). A good idea at the start of the round is to immediately all stick together, though not so close that you can all be taken out in one fell swoop from a Frag grenade, Hammer of Dawn or Boomshot, though close enough to have each others back and get in for the revive if need be.
As the majority of teams will break up to acquire weapons, dependant on the map, it's upto you to decide as a team what the weapon that can do the most damage is, and ensure your entire team goes the same route, all apart from one guy from your squad, who should go on flanking duty, simply for the off chance that their entire team also goes for the same weapon. It's risky, but the reward can prove big if successful and catch them off guard from behind, with the rest of the team immediately pushing forward as soon as they realise what's happened. Once you have secured the weapon, it's a good idea to plant a Frag grenade nearby, as no doubt as time goes on and the weapon respawns, an enemy will come to collect it. This proves particularly handy as well, because if the weapon is typically in view and not obstructed from view, and you see it pop-up saying you (or someone on your team) got a frag kill, then that acts as a good reminder to let you know the weapon has likely respawned.
Submission (aka. Meat-Flag), Guardian, Annex and King of the Hill
While they're different in several regards, the one thing they have in common is that at least 1 player must capture an objective at any given time. With regards to Submission, to score the capture, you have to score the meat-flag. Which means downing the Shotgun wielding Stranded bot, and bring him, like with Annex and King of the Hill, to a specific marked weapon location on the map. With Submission, you are only required to hold the flag for just about 5 seconds in the marked ring to win the round.
The same strategy applies to all 3 games modes here, and that is the use of your grenades, even the smoke grenade that you start with has its uses now. Never waste a good grenade, by all means pick up and an ink or a frag grenade, but make sure to plant your smoke somewhere nearby where you think an enemy might come by, you never know, it may just save your life later on. A good idea with Annex and King of the Hill, is if you score a capture and are defending it, plant any type of grenade in the objectives area, this way, if you get killed and the enemy rushes the objective to capture, depending on what grenade has been planted you are guaranteed to save your self some valuable seconds while you make your way back over to the objective after you respawn.
As for Submission (Meat-Flag), grenades are even more essential. If an enemy downs the meat-flag, grabs him and uses him as a meat-shield, it is no easy feat getting the enemy to release that Stranded flag, especially as enemies are usually around trying to protect the player at all costs. The best idea is to save and use any grenades you have for this match, the easiest way to get him to drop the Stranded is to simply chuck a smoke grenade, as the blast will stun and knock any enemy near its blast to the floor, whether they have a meat-shield in hand or not. Tagging locations is not as such a high priority here, though it will come in handy if you can work out which weapon location the enemy is taking the meat-flag towards, as you can of course plant something good here, though make sure it's something that gets a definitive kill on the Stranded's captors, so, ideally a Frag Grenade. This is a last resort, and is not advisable to break away from your team, but if you have a solid unit and are aware of where the enemy is headed, and can sneak by them to get in the sneaky plant, then by all means go for it, it will no doubt pay big dividends later on.
Guardian, or Assassination as it was known in Gears 1, is where each team has a leader they must protect and ensure his survival. So long as your leader remains alive and kicking, you continue to have unlimited respawns at your disposal. It's always a good idea to have the leader hang back, preferably with another player to watch his back at all times (this mode can prove painstakingly frustrating if playing with randoms in Public matches, it's advisable to ensure to have a full team together so everyone has an idea of the strategy at hand). The best way to ensure victory is to have your leader hidden in a room, the enemy will of course know where he is as an icon on their HUD indicates them to the location, as it does for you with regards to the enemy leaders position. Now, with your leader secured in a room, you want to get your old trusty grenades out, the more deadlier the better. Plant at least a smoke grenade at the entrances, typically rooms have two ways in, so the leader and his single protector can rustle up 2 smokes between them. The remaining team are of course to be on the hunt for the enemy leader, who may also be employing similar tactics, so be sure to watch out for those grenade plants. It's also a good idea to pick up the more deadly grenades, such as the Frag and Ink grenades and plant these at random blind spots around the map as and when you can. One side usually impatient eventually, and will either break from the group or wonder aimlessly around together. Whilst hunting for the leader, you may be surprised to find one of your randomly planted grenades has killed or even stunned him near your location, instantly giving you the upper hand, provided he has no near-by backup.
Once you have killed the enemy leader, not all is in the bag, you must finish off all remaining enemies, who will no longer respawn due to their leaders death. It's a good idea to come out of hiding at this point, but ensure not to panic. While you may need to break up to find the enemy, always ensure your leader is with two friendlies whilst on patrol, at this point you can break off into two parties to hunt the remaining player(s) down.
