Impressive first day UK sales of an estimated 1.23 million units (grossing around £48 million) have gone on to reach 1.78 million units (grossing £67.4 million) one week after release – the highest grossing figures of any entertainment launch in history.

According to figures just released by ELSPA/GfK-ChartTrack, sales of Modern Warfare 2 surpassed the Mamma Mia DVD release which had previously held the record for the top opening week ever by taking £25.8 million. The videogame launch also easily eclipsed the highest first week figure for the ‘Be Here Now’ album by Oasis – the record holder for music sales at £9.95 million.

Michael Rawlinson, Director General, Entertainment and Leisure Software Publishers Association (ELSPA), said, “These figures tell a clear story. The videogames industry is now an established part of the mainstream entertainment mix. Whilst the launch of Modern Warfare 2 has indeed been extraordinary, it is indicative of the growing popularity of videogames.
Some new screenshots from the forthcoming Sherlock Holmes versus Jack the Ripper have surfaced today in conjunction with an announcement that the game will be available on Xbox 360 on November 26th 2009 in Europe. Take a look at the screens HERE.

Game Info:

Sherlock Holmes versus Jack the Ripper allows you to take on the role of one of the most popular detectives of all time. It's 1888 London, and a series of particularly horrible murders takes place in the Whitechapel district of the East End of London where atrociously mutilated prostitutes' bodies are found. The police are unable to find a serious lead and the murders increase, creating paranoia and fear among the citizens. Sherlock Holmes starts looking for clues in the dark and sinister alleys of Whitechapel in order to follow the macabre trail of the one the press now calls Jack the Ripper. During a frightening adventure, Sherlock Holmes will try to bring out the true identity and the motives of the one who hides behind this scary alias.

The Sherlock Holmes series is known as one of the best franchises in adventure games and is acclaimed by critics worldwide. The detective starts his very first case on Xbox 360 in this game specially adapted for the console by the French studio Spiders. The game benefits from the specificities of the Xbox 360. This console version has its own new visual effects such as a new and realistic light and shadow system that truly gives life to the many characters and adds more realism to each one of the gorgeous scenes.

Sherlock Holmes versus Jack the Ripper on Xbox 360 offers players two different views that are accessible at any time: a third-person mode that offers a new cinematic perspective allowing the player to catch every detail of the scene, and a first-person mode for total immersion. The player will also find an original crime scene re- creation system that will allow him to test his theories during his progress in the investigation to follow the bloody trail of the terrifying serial killer.

Sherlock Holmes versus Jack the Ripper will be available on Xbox 360 on November 26th in Europe.

10 million Xbox 360 units sold in EMEA

Four years is a long time but today Microsoft has announced that the benchmark console sales of 10 million has been reach in Europe, the Middle East and Africa (EMEA). With the launch of Facebook, Twitter, Zune and Last.fm on the cards next week as well as next year's Natal, things are looking good for Xbox 360 owners with more joining the fold daily.

PRESS RELEASE

LONDON – 12 November 2009 - Xbox 360 today announced that it had achieved console sales to 10 million consumers across Europe, the Middle East and Africa in just four years. Reaching the landmark number has meant that Xbox 360 is the only console to achieve year-on-year growth across the region this year[1]. The launch next week of instant streaming HD movies, Facebook, Twitter and Last.fm on Tuesday 17th November 2009 transforms Xbox LIVE into the largest social network connected to the TV and strengthens Xbox 360’s already impressive line up of interactive entertainment services.

“Xbox 360 continues to pull ahead of the competition when it comes to delivering on a complete home entertainment experience and we think that Xbox Live currently is about 12 to 18 months ahead of its main rival PlayStation Network when it comes to offering service and content beyond traditional games,” said Martin Olausson, Director of Digital Media Research at Strategy Analytics. “By introducing innovative new services and content such as Natal, instant streaming of full 1080P HD video, and integrating social media features such as Twitter and Facebook, Xbox will likely attract a wider audience than its rivals and is in a great position to maximize sales in the next few years”.

2009 has been a pivotal year in Xbox’s journey from its gaming origins to now changing the way people consume and share entertainment content, interact with each other online and continue to play great games. It’s a change that people are embracing; there are more than 20 million Xbox LIVE active members worldwide and there have been over 1 billion downloads of gaming and entertainment content, with movie downloads doubling in the last year alone.

“Reinventing entertainment through, play, watch, connect and share. This is the vision that we have for Xbox 360 and today that vision is the reality for 10 million Xbox owners. European consumers are very discerning and demand a connected entertainment experience. That’s why we focused on providing content that is right and relevant for them and entertainment beyond just gaming to movies, music and social networking. We have delivered on this promise and next week will bring real innovation into the living room through instant streaming high definition movies, connecting with friends on Facebook and Twitter and a personalised music channel. Together, this represents a real shift in the way people are entertained every day,” said Chris Lewis, vice president Interactive Entertainment Business at Microsoft Europe.

This reinvention of entertainment has already seen a shift in where the Xbox lives in the home, with the majority (60%) of Xbox consoles now becoming integrated into the family living room. It has also caused a shift in the Xbox customer base as now 35% of Xbox customers are women and 64% are over the age of 25[2]. The arrival of the much anticipated ‘Project Natal’ will create a new category of gaming and entertainment experiences through controller-free gaming that makes Xbox 360 more inclusive and relevant to an even wider audience.

Modern Warfare 2 breaks UK sales record

It's official Activision's Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 has broken the UK sales record for first day sales topping the 631,000 units of GTA IV. Modern Warfare 2 garnered a very impressive 1.23 million units according to ChartTrack.

PRESS RELEASE:

London, United Kingdom 11 November 2009 – Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 did not fail to live up to the expectations as one of the most eagerly anticipated videogames releases of all time. Initial first day UK sales - November 10 - reveal that Modern Warfare 2 sold an estimated 1.23 million units, grossing around £47 million. According to figures just released by ELSPA/GfK-ChartTrack, this almost doubles the previous record held by Grand Theft Auto IV which sold an estimated 631,000 units, grossing £27.2 million on its first day of release (April 29, 2008).

Michael Rawlinson, Director General, Entertainment and Leisure Software Publishers Association (ELSPA), said, “These first day sales figures are astonishing and clear evidence that videogames are now mainstream in the UK. Our form of interactive entertainment has completely come of age. Just like some movies and books, this is specifically intended for an adult audience and accordingly has emotional, adult content. So, as an 18-rated videogame, it is important that this game is not played by children, and parents should be appropriately vigilant. We ask everyone to make sure they check the packaging of games to ensure they are suitable for their players, especially as we enter the festive season when videogames are one of the most popular gifts of the holiday. Parents can log on to www.askaboutgames.com for more advice and information relating to age ratings, sensible gaming and so on.”

Natal launch details revealed?

According to trade publication MCV some Natal launch details have been leaked from a supposedly secret Microsoft tour. The publication reveals that Natal will launch globally in November 2010 with some 5 million units available. There will also be 14 games and a price point below £50.

It sounds good but quite the wait, but considering Microsoft are viewing the Natal launch like that of a new console it will be interesting to see what these 14 games will entail, as ultimately it's these which will see the hardware to the gaming public. Either way, a year is a long time to wait, but hopefully Microsoft will be keen to showcase what's possible with the hardware to not only entice gamers but developers as well.
